K-9 Unit
Mesquite Police Department K-9 units, consist of highly trained handlers and canines in narcotics detection, search and apprehension of offenders, to better serve the citizens of Mesquite.
The Mesquite Police Department K-9 Detail has a new Belgian Malinois dual trained in Patrol --Narcotic Detection.
His name is Bruiser; his handler is Officer Kirt Hughes.
This dog is trained to locate human scent, and apprehend fleeing suspects. The K-9 is also trained in narcotic detection, to locate marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and opium.
The Mesquite Police Department K-9 Team will continue to grow, with the addition of a new team in 2008.
Historically the night time hours are where the biggest need for K-9 assistance exists. Properly trained and handled Police K-9 dogs, give Law Enforcement officers one of the finest tools in the prevention and detection of crimes.
Bruiser:
Bruiser is a Belgian Malinois, which is a larger breed of working dogs. Bruiser is brindle in color and stands 26.5 inches tall at the shoulders. He is very muscular and has a deep chested body. Bruiser carries his head and neck proudly above his body.
