Adult Summer Sports

The City of Mesquite is currently taking team registration for all adult leagues. Registrations must be made in person at the Mesquite Recreation & Parks Department Administrative Offices, located at 100 West Old Mill Road. Registration is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please be aware that you may only register one team and that no spots will be held over the phone. We cannot hold checks or cash for any reason, so please have your sponsor’s or personal check when registering.

• Adult Co-ed Softball Summer League begins May 17, 2011. (Games played on Tuesday Nights) League includes a 12-14 games schedule (depending on the amount of teams signed up), and a post-season tournament. Modified USSSA co-ed rules apply; players must be 16 or older to participate. Deadline to register a team is May 7, 2011

• Adult Men’s Softball Summer Wood Bat League begins May 18, 2011. (Games played on Wednesday Nights). League includes a 12-14 games schedule (depending on the amount of teams signed up), and a post-season tournament. Modified USSSA rules apply; players must be 16 or older to participate. Deadline to register a team is May 7, 2011

• Men’s Flag Football 5 vs. 5 Summer League begins May 19, 2011 (Games played on Thursday Nights). League includes an 8-10 games schedule included is a post-season tournament (depending on the amount of teams signed up). The deadline to register a team is May 14, 2011. All players must be 16 or older to participate.

For any team planning on participating, there will be a mandatory manager’s meeting, please contact the Mesquite Recreation & Parks Department for more information.

Late sign-ups will not be accepted for any of these sports and there will be no exceptions made after the deadline.

A sport application/team registration form must be filled out by all team sponsor and/or coach before the deadline in order for your team to acquire a spot or position in any of the adult sports league ran by the City of Mesquite Recreation & Parks Department.

The Desert Tortoise

Like many desert creatures, desert tortoises spend most of their lives "holed up." In spring and summer, they roam grazing on grasses and wildflowers, then head for their burrows when it gets too hot. In fall and winter, when it is cold and there is not much to eat, they stay burrowed in for six months or more at a time.

If you see a desert tortoise, you are seeing an endangered species. Please watch out for them on the roads. Tortoises live in washes and valleys where the soil is soft enough for them to burrow into, yet stable enough so they do not collapse. Remember, desert tortoises are protected under the Endangered Species Act and may not be handled or removed.

The Speedy RoadRunner

Called paisano in Mexico, the roadrunner is a well-known desert resident that only superficially resembles its popular cartoon portrayal. The greater roadrunner has adapted to life on the run. Though it can fly well, it prefers to use its strong legs and X- shaped toes to run rapidly over the desert landscape. Active predators, roadrunners aggressively chase insects, lizards, snakes, small birds and mammals.

Tolerant of humans, they sometimes nest in protected eaves and garages when they are not building large stick nests in desert trees. Their vocalizations include bill clicking noises and a mournful cooing made during breeding seasons. They do not meep-meep.
