Candidates may file for Mayor and two City Council member positions for the 2011 Mesquite Municipal Elections beginning Tuesday, Jan. 25 and ending Friday, Feb. 4. Candidates may file in the Office of the City Clerk Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Friday’s from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., on those dates. The candidacy filing fee is $25, which is payable by cash, check, certified check or money order.
“Mesquite Municipal Code requires a candidate must be an actual and bona fide resident of the City and have been for a period of at least one year preceding the election,” said Cherry Lawson, Mesquite City Clerk. “Also, Each candidate shall be a qualified elector who has actually, as opposed to constructively, resided within the boundaries of the city which he/she desires to represent for a period of not less than 30 days immediately prior to the last day for filing a Declaration of Candidacy. “
The 2011 Primary Election day is April 5 and the General Election is June 7. City Council Members shall be elected by the registered voters of the City at large. The Mayor and Council member newly elected would each serve a four-year term beginning July 1, 2011.
