City Election and Development Code items on City Council Agenda have been rescheduled

Public hearings on City Election Dates (Bill no. 436) and the Mesquite Municipal Unified Development Code (Bill no. 434), that were to appear on the next City Council Meeting agenda (Tuesday, Feb. 9), have been rescheduled for the Feb. 23 meeting because the notice failed to appear in the newspaper. The two matters were introduced at the Jan. 26 City Council Meeting.

“The City of Mesquite historically publishes its legal notices in the Las Vegas Review-Journal within the required 10-day advance period,” said Cherry Lawson, City Clerk. “While the procedures were followed by the City as they have in the past, we were notified by an advertising department representative they had discovered the notice hadn’t been published.”

Bill 436 will discuss the possibility of having primary elections in June and moving the general election to November to align them with State and Federal elections.

“Last summer we invited public input about aligning our local elections with State and Federal elections,” said Mayor Susan Holecheck. “While this delay is unfortunate, I believe it will give our residents more time to prepare to participate in the discussion.”

Consideration of Introduction of Bill No. 434, amending Title 9 of the Mesquite Municipal Code entitled “Unified Development Code,” by replacing in its entirety Section 9-5-1, Zoning Amendments and Section 9-5-2, Master Plan Amendments, to reflect requirements of State law, to streamline and consolidate Zoning, Master Plan, and Development Code Amendment procedures, and to add Minor Amendments to the Master Plan; Section 9-3-3, Procedures governed by these regulations and Section 9-7U-11, Modification of Master Development Plan and Development Standards, to correct cross references to code sections; and Section 9-7-2, Zoning Map, to add reference to Land Use Map; and other matters properly related thereto (Case No. DCA-09-004).

The Desert Tortoise

Like many desert creatures, desert tortoises spend most of their lives "holed up." In spring and summer, they roam grazing on grasses and wildflowers, then head for their burrows when it gets too hot. In fall and winter, when it is cold and there is not much to eat, they stay burrowed in for six months or more at a time.

If you see a desert tortoise, you are seeing an endangered species. Please watch out for them on the roads. Tortoises live in washes and valleys where the soil is soft enough for them to burrow into, yet stable enough so they do not collapse. Remember, desert tortoises are protected under the Endangered Species Act and may not be handled or removed.

The Speedy RoadRunner

Called paisano in Mexico, the roadrunner is a well-known desert resident that only superficially resembles its popular cartoon portrayal. The greater roadrunner has adapted to life on the run. Though it can fly well, it prefers to use its strong legs and X- shaped toes to run rapidly over the desert landscape. Active predators, roadrunners aggressively chase insects, lizards, snakes, small birds and mammals.

Tolerant of humans, they sometimes nest in protected eaves and garages when they are not building large stick nests in desert trees. Their vocalizations include bill clicking noises and a mournful cooing made during breeding seasons. They do not meep-meep.
