Pools not properly maintained can become Green Monsters

Pools can be a great backyard swimming
amenity, especially during the hot summer months experienced in
Southern Nevada.

Proper pool maintenance is important for the health and enjoyment of
those using the pool and also for a neighbor to someone who owns a
pool. A pool that is not properly maintained over time could become a
stagnant pond of green algae that affects the neighborhood.

“When a neighbor’s pool becomes green with goo or a nuisance in other
ways, many residents call the Health Department or the City,” said
Richard Secrist, senior planner for the City of Mesquite. “However,
many callers have found that staff downsizing has left both
organizations with fewer resources to intervene.”

Secrist recommends working directly with the pool owners or through
the resources of a homeowners association to resolve the problem.
However, with the right resources, pool issues don’t have to get to
this point.

For pool owners who do their own maintenance, supplies and
instructions are available from a pool contractor or retail pool
supply outlet. Secrist recommends Internet sites such as the Pool
School at Poolplaza.com or wiki.answers.com , which provide valuable
tips of the trade.

But there are also professional pool service and repair companies in
Mesquite that a pool owner can contract for regular maintenance. This
is especially practical for Mesquite’s many part-time residents who
will need things maintained while they are gone.

If a homeowner with a pool is leaving the area longer term, in some
instances it may be best to drain the pool. It is recommended to
consult a professional before doing so, or have a pool service company
do it. There are occasions where it is not a good idea to drain the
pool for a length of time especially when a pool is not strong enough
to withstand outside forces when empty. A high water table could give
an empty pool a boat-like effect.
