Activities offered at the Mesquite Recreation Center

Register Now for On Beat Dance & Cheer Classes

The Mesquite Recreation and Parks Department is offering a dance program called “On Beat Dance & Cheer” beginning Wednesday, June 15. This program offers classes are for children ages 2-12 in Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Lyrical, Tumbling, Technique, as well as cheer. The 3rd-6th Grade class begins at 9 a.m., Pre-School at
10 a.m. and the Kindergarten-2nd Grade 10:45 a.m. Classes are held at the Recreation
Center Dance room.

On the Beat Dance and Cheer focuses on the quality of instruction, not the quantity of dancers; your dancer will build self esteem, confidence, learn the importance of setting goals as well as the satisfaction of reaching them. Students also discipline, commitment, and what it takes to be part of a team. We are sure you and your dancer will get everything you have wanted in a studio.

McKel Lyman Studio Director said, “It has always been my passion and joy to share what I love the most “Dance”. Growing up in a family of dancers I started my training as soon as I could walk, I continued my dance training through high school as a member of the Snow Canyon Eshelles, and graduated from Tuacahn High School for the Performing Arts.

I started assisting my mother in classes at 12, took on my own competitive team at 15; and became the primary competition instructor for Dance Tracks at 17. I have trained with some of the biggest names in dance, and have won many personal as well as professional awards while owning Dance Tracks in Southern Utah for the last 8 years.

I make it my personal goal to assure each student feels welcome, excited, and passionate about their classes and each parent feels informed, as well as confidant about what On Beat Dance & Cheer offers. I am very excited to be part of the Mesquite Recreational program and even more so that you & your dancer are joining us. Summer is a great time to start your dance & cheer training. It allows lots of time for practice, and fun performances, Lyman added.

Shake Up Your Workouts

No exercise rut can survive Zumba, a new Latin routine that melds low-impact meringue, salsa,
tango, flamenco and other Latin-inspired dance steps into a cardio-fitness workout. It’s a 60 minutes class that is fun, high energy and doesn’t feel like grueling exercise.

“People always like something new and I believe dance is the best exercise and its fun. Everyone loves to dance, it’s a full-body workout, aerobic and strength building” said Instructor Susana Gonzalez. The workout is a comprehensive approach that targets muscles in the abs, gluteus, hips and quadriceps.

Experts say dancing burns calories, tone muscle, boosts energy and relieves stress, which is why moving and shaking, whether on the dance floor of a hip nightspot, in the studio of your neighborhood fitness center or in the privacy of your own living room is a great choice for exercise.

“Any exercise regimen has to be fun,” says Gonzalez. “If you participate in a class where they play great music and show you new moves, you’ll stay motivated. You’ve got to put that fun factor into exercising,” Gonzalez added. This class is great for beginning to advanced fitness levels.

The Mesquite Recreation Center is hosting this class every Monday & Wednesday at 6 p.m. The only requirement for Zumba is having a towel and water at each class. Comfortable light workout clothing and tennis shoes are important too. All fitness level welcome!
