Robbery reported at ATM

A Mesquite man who reported an early morning robbery at a bank ATM on West Mesquite Boulevard was later arrested for making a false report of a crime.

On Tuesday (Dec. 8), 43-year-old Lynell Markell Hunter of Mesquite reported to officers that while he was at an ATM at a West Mesquite Boulevard bank, two Hispanic males robbed him of $300. He said both suspects fled on foot. During the investigation, officers suspected Hunter was not being truthful, due to the inconsistencies with some of his statements. Officers checked at the casino where Hunter claimed he was just prior to going to the ATM. Casino security personnel said they remembered Hunter because he had to call the locksmith since he locked his keys in his car in the parking lot. Hunter finally admitted to losing the money gambling. Hunter added he didn’t want to tell his wife he had lost the money gambling and paying a locksmith.

Lieutenant Shane Charles commended Sergeant Scott Taylor and his shift for thoroughly investigating this “reported” crime and discovering that the alleged victim was lying. Lt. Charles said, “This was a good case of old-fashioned police work; officers don’t have the time nor the patience to investigate false reports of crimes.”
