Summer Aquatic Programs

The Mesquite Recreation Center is offering several water programs starting June 9, 2008.  The outdoor pool will be available for lap swimmers on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6-7 a.m.  This time is designed for a total workout that is controlled by the participant which gives them an opportunity to refine their strokes.

The Adult Swim 18+ will be hosted every Monday from 6:30-8:30 p.m.  Lap lanes will be available for lap swimmers.  Family Swim night will be held on Wednesday from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Another way to get your workout before going to work is being part of the Deep Water Aerobics class which is offered 3 times a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7-7:45 a.m.  The evening class will be held twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30-7:30 p.m. These classes will be a total body workout for participants with little to no impact on joints. Weight belt will be used to help participants float. This class is perfect for anyone but especially those with joint or arthritis problems.

For parents interested in signing their kids in a summer activity, here’s a class for you, the Learn to Swim program offered for children ages 6 months and up.  A Parent and Child class and the American Red Cross Swim Level 1-4 will be offered.  The parent and child class is designed for children 6 months to 3 years of age.  This class builds swimming readiness by emphasizing fun in the water.  Parents and children participate in several guided practice sessions that help children learn elementary skills, including water entry, submerge face in water, bubble blowing, front and back kicking, and early introduction to water safety.  Level I offers ages 3+ the opportunity to learn the basic water exploration; Level II focuses on primary skills, expands on the fundamental aquatics locomotion and safety skills; level III builds on skills by coordinating strokes and increasing endurance. Level IV develops endurance in strokes learned.

The Mesquite Swim Team will begin conditioning on Tuesday and Thursday at 4 p.m. starting May 13, 2008. This conditioning will give swimmers the opportunity to swim laps for 4 weeks prior to the official start date.  The swim team official start date will be June 9, 2008.  Practices will be held Monday-Thursday from 8:00-10:30 a.m. Participants must have the ability to swim full length of the pool without stopping and have the ability to complete the level 4 exiting skills requirement of the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program. New swimmers must have approval from Instructor.

The Mesquite Swim Team will host its first meet of the season June 21 at 7:00 a.m.  The team will complete against teams from the Tri-State Summer Swim League.

Open registration for all of the aquatics programs are now being taken at the Mesquite Recreation Center 100 W. Old Mill Road.  For more information on any of these programs contact Aquatics Coordinator Cindy Pringle at (702) 346-8732.
