Police Volunteer Program

The Mesquite Police Department Volunteer Program is composed of public spirited citizens who make various contributions to assist the department and, ultimately, the citizens and visitors to Mesquite.

The program is led by a civilian Volunteer Coordinator who reports directly to the Chief of Police. A Team Leader assists the Coordinator and additional Team Leaders will be designated as the program grows.

Volunteers range in age from a minimum of 18 to older than 80. Volunteers can be called on to assist in any area of department operations. Non-uniformed volunteers assist in the records division and communications (dispatch) on a regular basis. Uniformed volunteers conduct Citizen Volunteer Patrols and act as the primary enforcement resource for the department's handicapped parking enforcement program. In addition, volunteers participate in special events such as parades and other civic events, National Night Out, DUI checkpoints, and similar functions. On occasions, volunteers are called out to provide traffic control assistance at major accidents or crime scenes.

The volunteer uniform consists of police-style shirts with department patches, uniform pants and boots, and an optional baseball-style uniform cap identifying them as a police volunteer. The volunteers currently have three vehicles dedicated to their use. The primary volunteer patrol vehicle is a four-door sedan, fully equipped and marked. A secondary vehicle is an older van, also marked and equipped with a police radio and overhead amber lights. This can be used for patrol, transporting volunteers to events, and to transport traffic cones for either scheduled or unscheduled events. We also have an unmarked SUV with magnetic door signs. This can be used for administrative transport, surveillance when it is not desirable to have a marked unit, and, using the signs, as an alternate patrol vehicle.

Additional Mesquite Police Volunteers are welcome. Anyone interested is encouraged to call the Volunteer Coordinator, Don Woodmancy, at 702-375-1176 or visit the police department during business hours and pick up an application.
